Six-Game Day Decides
Quarterfinal Teams for Ylvisaker Cup

WELLINGTON, Fla. - Feb. 19, 2016 - Due to rain postponements earlier in the week, six Ylvisaker Cup games were held Thursday. All took place at International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC), with the exception of the Dubai/Tonkawa game, which was held at Tonkawa Farm.

Coca-Cola defeated Villa del Lago 13-6; Orchard Hill defeated La Indiana 10-6; Valiente defeated Audi/Millarville 12-10; Dubai defeated Tonkawa 11-6; White Birch defeated Enigma 10-6, and Palm Beach Illustrated/Technogym defeated Horseware/5 Star/Tackeria 17-5. The following teams advanced to the quarterfinals: Orchard Hill (3-0), Valiente (3-0), Palm Beach Illustrated/Technogym (2-1), White Birch (2-1), Dubai (2-1), Coca-Cola (2-1), Tonkawa (1-2) and Enigma (1-2).

Coca-Cola routed Villa del Lago 13-6 leaving them with a 2-1 record going into the quarterfinals. Coca-Cola had a slow start as Gillian Johnston scored the only goal for her team in the first two chukkers and the team carried a 3-goal deficit. Johnston scored another goal in the third, which may have been just the inspiration her teammates needed to increase the pressure on Villa del Lago. Sugar Erskine followed with five goals (three from the field and two converted penalties) and Julio Arellano tallied four goals from the field for a 5-goal lead going into the final chukker. Had it not been for Hilario Ulloa, the Villa del Lago team would have been without a goal, as all six of their goals belonged to him.

"We started out a little asleep but we woke up in the second half," said Johnston, who went on to score once more in the final chukker. "Sugar (Erskine) was excellent today. As a team, the four of us played really well together."

Orchard Hill Remains Undefeated With a

Orchard Hill scored three goals in the first chukker and did not contribute to the scoreboard again until the fourth. Heading into halftime, the teams were tied at 3-3 and it was anyone's game. The second half was a different story with Lucas Criado and Facundo Pieres each scoring four goals. Criado scored all four from the field including an impressive drive in the fifth chukker. Pieres capitalized on two penalty conversions and two goals from the field, captivating the crowd with an enormous 90-yard neckshot with a little more than two minutes left in the game.

"We weren't focused at the beginning," Pieres said. "We knew that we were already in the quarterfinals so we tried to save our horses and it took us three or four chukkers to start playing a little bit better. We played the last half of the game much better and it was enough to win."

Valiente Defeats Audi/Millarville 12-10

Valiente took Audi/Millarville out of contention for the Ylvisaker Cup with a 12-10 victory. Adolfo Cambiaso led the scoring with eight goals, all on penalty shots. His opponents had difficulty throughout the game gauging whether he was going to make one of his trademark power slams or trick them with a stealth shot. Nic Roldan was the high-scorer for Audi/Millarville with six goals, two of them from the field. He led Audi/Millarville to a one-goal lead at the top of the second half with a 140-yard bomb. The team continued its rally, ending the fourth with an 8-5 lead over Valiente. Then Cambiaso shifted back into high gear and slammed in four goals in the fifth. Audi/Millarville remained within striking distance the rest of the game, with only a one or two-goal gap. Ralph Richardson, a young rising star from England, subbed for Valiente patron Bob Jornayvaz.

Dubai Takes 11-6 Victory Over Tonkawa

The motto of the Dubai/Tonkawa game (which appears to be becoming the mantra of the 2016 Florida season) was: Don't let Diego Cavanagh get away with the ball. He'll either zip past everyone and run it into goal or pass it to Alejo Taranco, who more often than not will be waiting in the wings to finish off the play. Right out of the gate 8-goaler Cavanagh made the first two goals of the game, and then his counterpart Taranco made two sets of consecutive goals. During halftime the two (who usually sit out the break quietly or sometimes trade a casual joke) engaged in an intense strategy session in the tent, with patron Rashid Albwardy occasionally joining in. Albwardy went back to the field with a stellar performance, scoring in each chukker of the second half for a total of four goals. Dubai consistently led by four to five goals throughout the second half, ending the game with an 11-6 win.

White Birch Victorious Over Enigma

White Birch defeated Enigma 10-6 in a marathon game spanning over two hours. The match started off at a crawl with neither team contributing to the scoreboard in the first chukker. By the end of the half White Birch led 4-2. In the fourth and the fifth chukkers White Birch maintained a one-goal lead. Enigma was unable to score in the sixth and White Birch pulled ahead, securing the win by adding three more goals. Tomy Alberdi thrilled the crowd and earned the moniker "Bam-Bam" after hitting the building behind the goalposts with a 40-yard penalty shot. Alberdi and Ezequiel Ferrario both scored four goals each.

"We knew it was going to be a really hard team," Alberdi said. "They have been doing really well throughout the tournament. Mariano said to keep the pressure on them the whole time. It really feels good to win."

The winter flu season has plagued Horseware/5 Star Builders/Tackeria, and it affected its lineup in today's game. Matt Coppola, who played his last game while battling the flu, was too ill to play Thursday. Stephen Orthwein, Jr. subbed for him. Captain Mike Azzaro made all but one of the team's goals, scoring two from the field in the first half and coming on strong in the final chukker with two goals on penalty shots. Facundo Obregon was clutch from the penalty line through the entire game, scoring 11 goals plus another from the field. The 17-5 loss to Palm Beach Illustrated/Technogym eliminated Horseware/5 Star Builders/Tackeria from the tournament. Palm Beach Illustrated/Technogym, winners of the 2016 Joe Barry Cup, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ylvisaker Cup.
